Retail Job Titles and Descriptions

Retail Job Titles and DescriptionsRetail Job Titles and DescriptionsIf you are looking for a job in theretail industry, you should learn the job titles you can expect to see in listings. Retail means selling to the public. It can be a storefront, office, or online business. The retail business might consist of a single person with no employees, or it might be a small company where several employees each take on multiple roles. Or, it might be a large store or chain of stores with multiple departments and specialized positions. Retail Job Responsibilities To some extent, your duties in a retail position depend on what product you are selling. In addition, knowing your customer base well will ensure that youll reach your abverkauf goal at the end of the month. Retail staff must be familiar with both the products they sell and the needs of their customers. For someone selling camping gear, for example, it is not enough to know the difference between types of sleeping bags. To give t ruly excellent customer service, it is also helpful to have tried both of them. But all retail jobs, regardless of industry or market, are more alike than different. While there are exceptions, such as stocking clerks or some purely managerial positions, fruchtwein retail jobs involve a mix of working the cash register and providing customer service, plus some subtle but effective loss prevention. Some jobs include upselling, but many do not. Job titles tend to vary somewhat from one company to the next. The same job might be called a front end associate, a cashier, or a checker, depending on who the employer is. Conversely, duties might be divided differently at different businesses. For example, in one store, cashier and sales associate positions might be strictly separate, while in another, the same person might fill both roles at the same time, or perhaps on other shifts. And yet, certain job categories tend to be consistent from one business to another, at least above a certain size. If you have succeeded at one retail establishment, you will likely succeed with a similar title elsewhere. Top Retail Job Titles Entry-Level Positions New hires often find themselves working ascashiers, stockers, orsales associates, although these can be long-term positions for some employees. Some people, for example, work as cashiers for years while earning regular raises and increased benefits. These are not jobs without skill. Both cashiers and sales associates function as the public face of the company and provide most of the customer service within the store. Stockers might not interact with customers (some work while the store is closed), but they must be fast and accurate. These are entry-level positions because they dont involve supervising anyone. That is, the lead cashier is still a cashier, and might have no true authority, but acts to coordinate the work of the other cashiers, making sure everyone takes breaks at the proper time, and so on. Customer service representatives may act as lead cashiers or lead sales associates in some stores. In other retail organizations, these positions are separate, but the customer service representative still has greater authority because they are empowered to handle agitated customers. None of these job titles are management, however. In a large business, particularly one with multiple locations, there might be several layers of management. A department manager might be a team leader with an impressive title, the head of a department, but not part of management in a technical sense. Sales managers are true managers, responsible for training the sales team, setting goals and quotas, and making related decisions. A store manager is responsible for an entire location in a chain, while a regional manager is responsible for several locations in a chain. Depending on the company structure, there may be other managerial positions. At each level, each manager may have one or more assistant managers. These positions seldom involve any customer contact. Some managers rarely even speak to entry-level associates. But an awareness of the principles of sales is still an important background for these positions. Charles Copeland

Charles Copeland Charles Copeland Charles CopelandHow focused is your career? The career of Charles W. Copeland (1815-1895) took a straight and narrow path. After being educated as a draftsman in Connecticut in the early 1800s, he worked at his fathers engine and boiler company, where he learned about machinery, tools, boilers, and the steam engine trade. He became an engineer at New Yorks West Point Foundry, the foremost iron plant of its kind. His engineering career focused on the forefront of modern steamer and engine design for many years, and his designs advanced many aspects of steamships, steam engines, transportation, navigation, safety, and seestreitmacht research and fishing over the next century. Working at West Point Foundry, he designed the first iron hulls ever used in steamers in the U.S. The steamer called Siamese, which worked on Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana, had two iron hulls and two engines turning a single paddle wheel between them. He also designed steamers a nd engines for the Long Island Sound, the Harriet Lane, and multiple businesses in California. He designed steamers used on Lake Erie, and his ferryboats were considered marvels at the time. Copeland designed machinery for the Fulton, the first steam vessel used by the Navy, and the first iron steamers used for naval service. He also designed their Mosquito Fleet steamers that served in the Mexican American War. Although he designed and built marine engines for naval steamers and served as a consulting engineer for the Board of Navy Commissioners, he welches never in the Navy. Charles Copelands ideas defined the forefront of steamships, engines, and the inventive use of iron in marine and naval navigation. He was the first to implement many new steam engine improvements, and according to prof R. H. Thurston of the Stevens Institute of Technology in his 1883 book, A History of the Growth of the Steam Engine, a considerable number of the now standard details of steam-engine and steamb oat construction were devised or introduced by Copeland. He invented independent engines driving blowing fans, bilge-injection that used a condenser and air pump to pump water out of the inside of a ship when leaking seriously, and a modified double-poppet valve with an improved shape. The side-lever steam engine developed for the steamer Pacific was the earliest and the first to use wrought iron framing. This engine was considered the best example of its type by Thurston in his Popular Science article from 1878, The Growth of the Steam Engine. During the Civil War, Copeland designed fleets that could operate in the shallow waters of the South. His double-enders enabled navigation of the river channels there. Later, he continued to design steamers for the New York Transportation Company and The United States Lighthouse Board. Boiler explosions were common in steamboats during the early 1800s, causing thousands of deaths. In 1838, a law was passed that required boilers and engines to be periodically inspected for safety, but continuing accidents proved the inspections to be inadequate. The Steamboat Bill of 1852 went before Congress and Copeland was called to provide his opinions about the plans in the proposed law, which was unanimously passed. Copeland was appointed the first supervising inspector covering the New York territory and served in this capacity for almost a decade. Further changes in the steam power industry were spurred by continuing boiler explosions in other parts of the country, including the Sultana Riverboat in 1865 that took more than 1,000 lives. Among the changes was the formation of the ASME. Copeland suggested the societys name, and his participation as a founding member brought perspective to the group that took into account the issues of steam engines used in navigation. These changes eventually led to the formation of codes and standards, reducing boiler accidents and saving lives. Copeland also designed a floating hatchery ship for the Fish Commission called the Fish Hawk, which collected fauna off the East Coast and could dredge in medium depth waters. It was so capable a ship that in the early 1880s, Copeland was requested by the Fish Commission to design another research vessel. This resulted in the steamer Albatross and the two-cylinder steam engines that powered it. This state-of-the-art ship was the first large research vessel anywhere in the world, and the first to have electric lights aboard. It was the best equipped ship for deep-sea dredging, helped explore known and new fishing areas, and changed how fish biology was studied from collection and dissection to a more integrated approach. His vessel helped study possible causes of dwindling food supplies in the Atlantic in the late 1880s, enabled the largest marine naturalist collection to be collected, and served worldwide for more than 40 years, outliving its designer by more than a quarter century. Debbie Sniderman is an independent writer.Copeland designed machinery for the Fulton, the first steam vessel used by the Navy, and the first iron steamers used for naval service.

9 Tips for Minimizing Workplace Negativity

9 Tips for Minimizing Workplace Negativity9 Tips for Minimizing Workplace NegativityNothing affects employee morale more insidiously than persistent workplace negativity. It saps the energy of your organization and diverts critical attention from work and performance. Negativity can occur in the attitude, outlook, and talk of one department member, or in a crescendo of voices responding to a workplace decision or event. As a manager or human resources professional, you are closely in touch with employees throughout the company. You receive employee complaints, do exit interviews with employees who leave, and know the reputation of your organization in your community. You can monitor the discussions on employee intranets, manage the appraisal and 360-degree feedback process, and coach managers in the appropriate staff treatment. This information helps you learn to identify the symptoms of negativity before its morale-busting consequences damage your workplace. It will also assist you in preventing and curtailing workplace negativity. Diagnose Workplace Negativity Negativity is an increasing problem in the workplace, according to Gary S. Topchik, the author of Managing Workplace Negativity. He states, inManagement Review, that negativity is often the result of a loss of confidence, control, or community. Knowing what people are negative about is the first step in solving the problem. When rumblings and negativity are surfacing in your organization, talking with employees will help you understand the exact problems and the degree to which the problems are impacting your workplace. You will want to identify the exact employee groups who are experiencing the negativity and the nature of the issues that sparked their unhappiness. Perhaps the organization made a decision that adversely affected staff. Perhaps the executive manager held a staff meeting and was perceived to threaten or ignore people asking legitimate questions. Whatever the cause of the workplace ne gativity, you must address the issues. Or, like a seemingly dormant volcano, they will boil beneath the surface, and periodically bubble up and overflow to cause fresh damage. 137 Watch Now 8 Ways to Create a Happier Workplace 9 Tips to Minimize Workplace Negativity Remember that the best way to combat workplace negativity is to keep it from occurring in the first place. 1. Control Over Their Job Provide opportunities for people to make decisions about and control and influence their job. The single most frequent cause of workplace negativity is traceable to a manager or the organization making a decision about a parties work without their eintrag. Almost any decision that excludes the input of the person doing the work is perceived as negative. 2. Opportunity to Express Opinions Make opportunities available for people to express their opinion about workplace policies and procedures. Recognize the impact of changes in such areas as work hours, pay, benefits, assignment of over time hours, comp pay, dress codes, office location, job requirements, and working conditions. These factors are closest to the mind, heart and physical presence of each individual. Changes to these can cause serious negative responses. Provide timely, proactive responses to questions and concerns. 3. Use Consistent Fair Treatment Treat people as adults with fairness and consistency. Develop and publicize workplace policies and procedures that organize work effectively. Apply them consistently. 4. Provide Trust and Respect Treat your employees as if they are trustworthy and worthy of your respect- because they are. Start from a position of trust when you hire a new employee. Verify their performance, truthfulness, and contribution over time to confirm your original position. Do not start from a position of believing that people must earn your trust. That positioning ensures that negativity will take over in your workplace. Employees have radar machines and they are constantly scoping out their work environment. If you dont trust them they will know you dont. 5. Target Punishment and Rules Do not create rules for all employees when just a few people are violating the norms. You want to minimize the number of rules directing the behavior of adult people at work. Treat people as adults and they will usually live up to your expectations, and their own expectations. 6. Be Inclusive Help people feel included- each person wants to have the same information as quickly as everyone else. Provide the context for decisions, and communicate effectively and constantly. You cannot over-communicate if your desire is to reduce negativity and gain the confidence and support from your employees. 7. Provide Opportunity for Growth Afford people the opportunity to grow and develop. Training, perceived opportunities for promotions, lateral moves for development, and cross-training are visible signs of an organizations commitment to staff. Make your commitment to employee growth and de velopment by creating mutually developed career path plans for every employee. 8. Be a Leader Provide appropriate leadership and a strategic framework, including mission, vision, values, and goals. People want to feel as if they are part of something bigger than themselves. If they understand the direction, and their part in making the desired outcomes happen, they can contribute more. People make better decisions for your business when you empower them with the information they need to make decisions that strategically align with your overall direction. 9. Give Recognition Provide appropriate rewards and recognition so people feel their contribution is valued. The power of appropriate rewards and recognition for a positive workplace is remarkable. Suffice to say, reward and recognition are two of the most powerful tools an organization can use to buoy staff morale.

Typically this involves an employer petitioning their government for a work visa for the prospective employee. It can be very challenging for a young American working on their own to convince an employer to take this action on their behalf when there are many native workers available with similar skills. Enrolling in an Overseas Work Program Almost all Americans working abroad for the summer secure employment with the assistance of an intermediary organization with contacts in the host country or with access to positions designated for cultural exchange for young people. These programs charge a fee, which can be modest in some cases and ra ther costly in others. BUNAC is one of the most common services that American students use to secure work visas for Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and France. BUNAC charges a reasonable fee for a work permit and provides assistance with finding accommodations and work but does not actually place participants in a job.Planet Au Pair secures matches between au pairs and families in Spain without a fee. You will need to carefully research program fees before applying and make sure that the program offers summer placements. fruchtwein internships are unpaid, but some do include compensation. The International Center at the University of Michiganoffers a helpful site on work abroad with useful content and links to programs. The Study Abroad Center at the University of California at Irvine provides another set of useful links on working abroad. Studying Abroad Another option is for students engaged in a spring or full-year study abroad program to use that time to make contacts with local employers while t heyre pursuing their studies. Faculty and staff at your host college can be good sources for referrals as can the families of any native college friends whom you meet. If your study abroad experience includes staying with a host family, you can often gain access to some of their connections in the surrounding community. In most cases, students can either work or intern during the semester in conjunction with their studies and if these experiences are highly successful, an employer might sponsor them for work during the next summer. Consult with your colleges study abroad or international programs office to learn more about how this might work in various countries.

The Art of Multitasking for Work-at-Home Moms

The Art of Multitasking for Work-at-Home MomsThe Art of Multitasking for Work-at-Home MomsMultitasking is a way of life for many work-at-home moms. The term work-at-home mom (WAHM) implies multitasking. Many WAHMs dont employ outside childcare but work while caring for children- two very demanding tasks. But even WAHMs whose children are in the care of others can find themselves multitasking. Work-at-home moms must learn how to multitask effectively as part of a time management strategy. But even more important, they must develop the wisdom to know when to employ it. As with any art, to achieve beautiful results, one must be disciplined. Multitasking practiced without discipline, meaning at inappropriate times and places, is inefficient and detrimental to family balance. The View of Multitasking The Atlantic, in an article condemning multitasking, quotes Publilius Syrus, a slave in the 1st century B.C., who said, To do two things at once is to do neither. And the American Psychol ogical Association highlights a study that shows that mentally shifting gears between tasks costs more time than it saves. An article on NPR.org points out that many times we think we are multitasking when we are not. We are moving ur attention from one task to another very quickly but not working on them simultaneously. Multitasking Is Built Into Being a Mom In some ways, that last point is simply picking nits for work-at-home moms. Whether were switching gears quickly or doing two things at once, we have a lot of balls in the air. So the question becomes how to keep them from raining down on us. Multitasking is part of being a mom from the first time you sling a baby on your hip while wiping up spilled milk. The ability to multitask is an essential personality trait for work-at-home moms. But how much you can practice it depends on your child care choices, job,and family. For instance, telecommuting employees and independent contractors have differing amounts of freedom to int egrate home and work tasks. And parents of toddlers may find that, for safety reasons, their child requires their undivided attention. And so, in the end, Im going to have to disagree with the slaves and psychologists. Multitasking is not inherently bad but, like anything else, it can be overused. So just be mindful of your multitasking and set some multitasking guidelines for yourself.
